Weakness: Expensive; Doesn't last long because it is only 16ml; Printer cleans its print nozzles excessively than it needs to and this process eats inks very fast! Smart rip off strategy.
I use it for my Canon MP160 just for grayscale printing and copying. Our multifunction printer was bought during Xmas sale and used a few times per week. In two months it started showing the low ink warning. I didn't count pages but it is somewhat about over 200 pages. PG-40 is expensive because it doesn't last long. This is a pretty typical OEM black cartridge from Canon. It seems to last me a few months of prints and copies (probably around 300 pages). I do most of my printing in black and white, but it appears the printer also uses a bit of the color ink to improve grayscale images. Cost is about average for this type of cartridge. As of this writing, few generic/refill alternatives are available for this...
Strengths: No noticeable difference with the more expensive, newer model cartridge.
Weakness: None noticed.
I've used the PG-40 Black Cartridge with the Canon Pixma MP450 and had absolutely no complaints. I'm sure there are differences between the PG-40 and the newer, more expensive model, but I have not noticed any. I'm sure it's fine for any basic printing tasks.

I like Cannon printer and cartridge because of good quality and affordable price. I think this Canon PG-40 Black Cartridge for IP1600 has enough capacity for my print work at home.

This cartridge was easy to install and setup and I was surprised at the relatively low cost. I usually find that new printers are about the same cost as new black and color cartridges but this cartridge is cheaper than HP or Dell cartridges.

I used this for my low budget MP160, compared with the price I paid for printer (free after rebate, bought with a laptop), this is too much. actually I didn't use it so often since I mainly printed pictures. but this is a good one. the only thing I noticed was the black color was not pure black.

Weakness: Did not get an auto email reply from seller that sale had gone through. Had to email to make sure but got a quick positive response. Wish cartridge would last longer when doing many photos.
Tried re-filling the old cartridge. Even following online instructions does not seem to last long, or needs to be printed high quality, for first copy or two, or it comes out weak. So guess you have to keep buying new cartridges. Be careful some advertisers on other sites are for cartridges and some listings on other sites look to be re-fill kits.

This cartridge is factory recommended. It prints very fast and clear. I would buy it again for my printer. I haven't had problems since using this cartridge in my printer.

Well, it costs more than the older type w/o printhead but last about the same. If you print a lot then be prepared to spend more $$. It could be refilled but a bit harder than their older BCI-eBk type.

I just bought this ink and i printed just one page and now it says I have low ink on BOTH cartriges, and i havent even used the color one yet. It is very poor quality and it has lines running through the picture DO NOT BUY THIS INK DO NOT BUY THIS INK!! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY
