Plain & Simple the Ricoh AP410N is an excellent B/W Laser printer:
It prints text and photos exceptionally well…very sharp output,
better than other printers in this price range, and it is more
economical to operate than most of the others…respectively.
One thing that sets this printer apart from the others is that it comes with a very
thick-heavy-gauge power cord, and it is unremovable. (you can tell it’s high quality).
Also worth mentioning, is that the AP410n doesn’t curl the paper as much
as other laser printers do, and the print-registration is almost perfect.
The AP410 features a very advanced print driver menu, especially
for Postscript & PCL 6, better than others I’ve seen, and still easy
to navigate and understandand. It also has a nice LCD Panel with a flashing
Status indicator on the front side of the printer for easy viewing.
On top of that it comes with actual Adobe Postscript 3™, not just an emulation,
this is very important if you work with professional graphics programs.
Other things I like, is that the On-Off switch is located at the front of the
printer (unlike some models that place the switch to the rear) and the printer
exhaust fan is in a perfect location for my particular setup.
The AP410N does make a little more noise than other printers we own, but not
unbearably loud, and the noise level only comes up at the point when you invoke the print command, then it quiets-down as the sheet (s) begin to print.
It is otherwise very quiet.
Remember, this printer designed for heavy duty use (150,000 sheets per month}
If you’re going to buy this printer, go for the (N) model, it comes with
more memory than the non-networking model…64mb vs. 128mb.
And that’s more memory than you’ll find with competing printers.
We haven’t tried printing envelopes or labels so I can’t comment on that.
My only gripe with this printer is that the by-pass tray doesn’t extend-out
far enough to properly hold 8.5 x14 (legal size) paper, and the adjustable paper guides
are a bit too loose (or flimsy) for my liking…your page (s) may print a little crooked,
unless you carefully feed them through yourself, so if you plan to print a lot of legal
paper, buy an extra paper tray and this would solve the problem.
By the way, the paper tray is very well made and incorporates a precision spring
loaded rear paper-stop, which (In my opinion) is vital for good print registration.
The color of the AP410 is quite pleasing, it’s a more contemporary putty-color
(not as beige as with older printers etc) kind of like a bone color, leaning towards Grey.
We’ve only had the AP410N for a couple of weeks, so I can’t comment on everything
it has to offer, or perhaps other things we may not like about it, but so far I feel the
AP410N is a high quality product that will serve our needs for many years to come.
I hope this helps others with their decision-making on the purchase of a good laser printer.
