Announced just last week, the HP B8850 is a new, competitively priced 13 inch / A3 photo printer aimed squarely at the keen amateur photographer. The B8850 offers a very similar specification to its well-received big brother, the B9180, whilst cutting features that most users won't need to bring the price down. Is the HP B8850 a veritable bargain, or does it cut too many corners? Jon Canfield...

A great disappointment
Strengths: none
Weakness: 1. HUGE size 2. sllllloooooowwwww. 3. completely HORRIBLE photo printing. 4. out of focus, blurry edges on images, even on plain text printed. 5. frequent paper jams. 6. often draws up 4 pages at once
Well, my list above just about says it all.
I've had about 10 HP printers in the past, all of them excellent. I cannot imagine why they would market this horrible product. My office manager got it for us to print photos, and after one day of use I'm sending it back. Choose ANY HP printer other than this one -- all of them, even a $50 printer, will make better photos than this.
Tremendously SLOW. Color reproduction is horrible, and images blurry, way too dark even to recognize detail features. Completely unacceptable even in making black text on white paper.
It also has a driver that apparently has it's own troubles - bogging down and taking 15 seconds or so even to START a print job. 5 times in one day it sucked up multiple sheets of brand new paper , thus causing paper jams.
I could go on and on, but suffice it to say - besides being way too slow, jamming continuously, and having absolutely horrible photo and text printing - well, EXCEPT for those things, it's a pretty good printer.
Defintly buy anything else HP and you will generally be satisfied, but they really were asleep at the wheel when they let this one off the assembly line.
