HP B 9180 Photosmart Pro Printer

Strengths: Pigment Ink Size prints 13x19 HP Paper ICC color profiles Print speed Automatic Calibration Low Ink usage

Weakness: Feeder Pin wheel marks on prints Noise No roll paper feeder

I have had this printer for a few days and have made about 60 8x10 prints. The quality of the finished prints is supreme. I have noticed little wheel lines on some finished prints that must have come from the automatic paper feeder of the main. I did not have the wheel marks using the special Media Tray (feeding one sheet at a time). I have not made 13x19 prints yet but I forsee no problems with the paper other than making room for the printer to pass the paper from front to back. Big paper sizes are prined on a single pass through process so you need the room behind the printer for the paper. For 8x10 I print with the printer a few inches away from the wall. For bigger paper I will have to turn it 90 to get the needed space.

Set up took about 55 minutes and all you need to do is follow the quick start up guide and the printer does all the work. The printer calibrates itself (which takes about 25 min). I am using a USB connection and have no experience with the ethernet or network set up.

I purchased trial packages of paper (18 different types) from Red River that are designed to work best with Pigment inks. Red River also has ICC profiles for the B9180 and all their papers. So far they all look good. What did surprise me is that I tried some cheap paper from Sam's club and Costco that was designed for Ink Jet printers. These inexpensive papers made wonderfull looking prints on the B9180.

The HP prints so quickly that I have become spoiled and now seem to only print 8x10 where I used to print contact sheets.

Great printer and it will be even better when I figure out how to get rid of the pin wheel marks

Good printer but wasteful

Strengths: Perfect prints

Weakness: Calibration uses an enormous amount of resources, very noisy

I've never seen better prints than come out of this printer. Unless you need roll paper, there is no reason to buy anything else.

On the other hand, the closed loop calibration runs automatically every single time the power is turned on. This blows through three sheets of photo quality paper (because it insists it can't calibrate on anything else) as well as a lot of ink. Can't it remember how it is calibrated, or at least run a small calibration check on cheap paper before running the full calibration routine? I would like to decide myself if the calibration is poor enough to pay $6 to fix it. Instead, I get to pay every time I turn it on. There's no way to cancel a calibration.

You can avoid this (until the next power failure) by leaving it turned on. But the price you pay for that strategy is the enormous number of random clicks, clanks, buzzes and head movements that it engages in instead of just sitting quietly doing nothing.

That's one major and one minor complaint. In exchange, the images are truly stunning.

Astonishing!

Strengths: perfect colors, 8 ink cartridges

Weakness: heavy, no lcd display

for everyone who wishes to have 13 x 19 photo printouts this is the printer to own and use; cost of replacement cartridges is high and considering that there is 8 of them inside you will have to pay about $250 for set of them; worth? yes if you are professional user and if you have extra money to spend on this nice toy

B9180

Strengths: Incredible quality - as good as the very best photolabs.Pigment inks stable for up to 200 years! a3+ size, well built, doesn't waste much ink. Self maintaining so shouldn't be prone to clogging.

Weakness: Its big, ink is expensive but cartridges are larger than comparable printers. Must be left on (services itself) but power comsumption very low. Glossy finish less good than dye based printers.

Truly excellent product. A3+ prints on HPs advanced matte and art papers need to be seen to be believed. The only improvements I would suggest would be smaller size and quieter operation. Glossy prints are excellent just not quite as good as the best dye based printers (the price of print longevity).

Horrible

Strengths: Prints well when working right.

Weakness: Hardware and software is horrible.

Our printer kept giving us "paper jam" errors. We followed HP's recommendations for clearing the error. I downloaded the most up to date drivers and firmware. Still gave me the errors. My 1 year manufacturers warranty ended 3 weeks before this started happening. We've printed less than 500 pages through it, very few actual photos. This thing hasn't been pushed hard or had strange media put through it and it goes belly up on us. $600 down the drain. I'm going to Epson or Canon now.

I am a Hewlett Packard Technician and with your warranty comes a 1 year replacement warranty. If you kept having the problem you should have contacted HP and they would have replaced your printer immediately. Hewlett Packard also offers a three year extended warranty for your product at a price of $115.00. You will not find this with Epson or Cannon.

My first photo printer - HP B9180

Strengths: Fast printing. Image quality on hp advanced photo paper

Weakness: Noise, heavy, huge...

This is my first photo printer. I know it's quite expensive than most of photo printer. but I want to try this because of the 8 ink, large paper compatibility, and the cost of ink. So far, so good. I love the picture on hp advanced glossy paper a lot. but when i printed on hp premium glossy, it doesn't look like real photo. I might make a mistake on setting.. other than that, it is great machine!!

HP Photosmart Pro B9180

Try as we might, we couldn’t come up with any significant defects in the Photosmart Pro B9180. The only thing we didn’t like is how the printer can sometimes crimp one end of very thick paper when fed through the manual-feed slot.
