I got a genuine Brother replacement cartridge, and I must say that I'm very happy with it. No streaks, no messes. The TN-570 lasts a lot longer than the TN-540 and only costs about $10 more, so it's a much better deal. Don't forget to recycle your old cartridge.

TopStrengths: Similar to other toners. Doesn't jam. No drum in it, so it's cheaper.
Weakness: Must install into the drum, which is another step.
You can save money since the drum is separate. Lasts about below average compared to other toners of this class, but at lease it's cheaper. Doesn't offer a recycling program anymore.

TopStrengths: Original catridge was TN-540 and it is still working fine after 1.5 years of casual printing on the HL-5140 printer. Using Genuine Brother toner is not expensive compared to frequently buying inkjet

I bought the Brother TN-570 to replace the original TN540 cartridge when it runs out, but so far its been 1.5 years and still providing good / consistent (no smearing) printouts.
To ensure I get the same good quality after the original catridge wears out, I bought an original high yield replacement which will last me many more years to come.
The cost to maintain a laser printer is cheaper than an Inkjet system when printing black/white. You don't save too much more using a generic or remanufacturered cartridge and run the risk of it not working as well.

Prints are very clear and clean! I haven't had any problems with print quality so far. Compared to toner I have experience with in the past, I have only had one Brother brand toner that produced bad prints before toner amount became empty, so I have little doubt that this one will last it's full life. (We use about 1 toner/month at my office with a different Brother machine.) I highly recommend using this TN-570 over the TN-540 because you get more pages for your money!

This product was used to produce laser copies for legal loan documents and was consistent in its quality of print and shading. No problems with it and it lasted almost exactly as long as promised.

TopStrengths: Genuine Brother consumable replacement. Low cost per page, assuming the standard 5% yield.
Weakness: Cheaper is always better.
It works. No compatibility issues since it is a GENUINE Brother product. Used a Office Depot mailed coupon to help ofset the cost even more. Total purchase cost of $63 in August 2005.

I've been using this model toner cartridge in three Brother printers for over two years without any problems. If you shop around you can still get it for around $60. Like the other reviewers said, don't bother with the TN540, get the higher capacity TN570 for a few dollars more. I don't even consider any other cartridge for my printers.

This high yield cartridge is a much better value than the standard TN540 cartridge. Shop around and you can find them for around $60 shipped which is a great value. Why bother with compatibles when Genuine Brother can be purchased at such a reasonable cost. Bravo Brother for offering a great product at a good value!

Get the TN-570 large capacity cartridge, not the smaller tn-540. It has about twice the capacity for not much more money. I tried refilling a cartridge, but several months later I had problems.
