Some reviewers say the rebate is a scam. You just have to read very carefully. Some of them require you pay retail price. I found one on HP website that said only requirement was to purchase from an authorized dealer. I sent it in and paid a total of twelve dollars for this printer after my rebate. I bought it for my daughter to use for college. Works with Vista. Very easy setup. For the price I can't complain.

This printer is ideal for anyone who wants a starter laser printer. It is fast to start, easy to load, and at 12 pages a minute, never feels like it's taking forever to finish a job. The LaserJet 1018 is a great alternative to inkjet printers. I haven't seen how long toner lasts, though. But it seems the printer comes with basic toner cartridge good for 1000 pages.
The setup was easy, and I managed to set it up within twenty minutes. It's great being able to enjoy the convenience of fast printing after using an inkjet for the past ten years. The printer shoots out the first page immediately without having to warm up, and its very lightweight and small size making it more portable. I love it.
Overall, I am very pleased with this printer and like my title says I recommend it for Home & Small Office.

Bought from Staples, been using since 2 months and my observation is that its an excellent printer, very inexpensive, set up in 3 minutes, runs like a champ, very quiet, almost jam-proof, quiet small. The only thing missing is USB cable (does not come with printer).
The tray only holds 150 pages. When it runs out of paper, it stops printing. And unlike the older HP 5P, when you reload it with pages, it doesn't automatically start printing again. You have to hit the "Retry" command via the computer. The tray is uncovered, so the pages collect dust. I have had it for a couple of weeks and I have had no problems so far.
Other than that, I am very impressed that a printer I would have expected to pay $1000 for just a few years ago can be had for so little, and in such a small package today.

This is a good home/small business black and white printer. The quality is very nice and it prints very quickly.
The two bad things about it are the fact that the on/off switch is on the back of the printer on the left side, I don't print much so I try to shut my printers off when not using so this makes it a little inconvenient. The toner that is included is a starter 1000 page toner while the full toner does 2000 pages. Pretty much all other HP laser printer come with full toners now.
Overall I like it a lot, the price is very low so it's expected to have a starter toner.

I purchased this printer to replace my HP 5L and should have done it much sooner! This unit has a small footprint, but delivers the quality and dependability of a much larger printer. I have used it extensively since making the purchase two weeks ago and it has yet to jam or pull through multiple sheets of paper as my 5L did almost daily. I recommend this unit to anyone needing a good quality printer for a fair price.

I bought this printer to replace my old HP1100, which with me for over 3 years. I got this printer from Newegg and have been using it for over two months now. As expected, this printer is very easy to install. Once you started the PC, Windows XP automatic recognized it without any issues. I tested the printer by print out some web page and very impress with the performance. It print faster than my old HP1100 and also much quiet too. It seems everywhere are selling this printer at a discount price (Less than $100), I would consider this is a good buy. If you consider to buy this printer because of the rebate. Think again! My rebate sent in almost two months and it has been stuck in "received" status. Hopefully, it will change to "processing" sometimes this month.

This printer replaced an older HP Laserjet that started misfeeding. Its used in an office environment as a personal printer for a VP. Its small size doesn't take up a lot of valuable desk space and the fast printing is a plus when something needs to be printed quickly for a meeting, etc. I've purchased a second one for another person in our office.

HP is using a clause in their rebate form to deny rebates. If you do not pay MSRP, the will say that you got "special pricing" which the rebate excludes. Beware!

hp has denied all rebates for past and future purchases of this product. (if you purchased over the internet). their catch is that you have to pay full price for the printer, then the rebate applies. if you dont pay (msrp) your rebate will be denied.
mass mailings all rebate rejections)have been sent out the week of 08/26/07. for those who bought this printer expecting a rebate. (surprise!!!)
donot buy this product... unless you want to pay full price...

This is one of the best personal laser printers. It is very compact and prints pretty fast at 12PPM. It can be faster with EconoMode as well as save toner cartridge. You need to get an USB cable to hook it to your computer. The USB cable is not included in the package. You can get one from eBay for a few bucks. So the question you might ask is that why HP sells it at such a low price? While there are two reasons. First one is competition from other printer makers such as Brothers, Canon, Minolta, Sharp, Xerox and Lexmark. The second reason is that HP expect you to buy their toner Cartridges. The included cartridge can print only about 1000 pages. You can buy a refill kit from eBay at a fraction of the price of a HP toner cartridge.
So if you don't need to use copy and scanner, this is good for you. Otherwise, get a HP all-in-one laserJet.

This entry level printer from HP does its job of printing everyday text just fine. The graphic quality is a bit grainy however, but nothing out of ordinary for a budget printer. It would be nice to include parallel port in addition to USB like some of HP's competitors. Overall, a decent budget printer.

Works great with my usb print server (i guess it would have been too much for this printer to have a ethernet port), print quality is good, first page in less than 10 seconds. I would recomand this to anyone that needs a basic laser printer at a very nice price (after the $65 rebate from HP).

Weakness: i would have given this printer 5 stars , but it does not come with a usb cable. what is hp thinking? besides that, no other weaknesses found.
i would highly recommend this product to others because it is a great printer. i think it only weights 15lbs. or so. it comes with ink toner right out of the box which is great. it also has a nice overall design. there are no obscure corners or awkward placement of buttons and wires. printer is durable and made of good quality.

HP makes excellent printers. The Personal Laserjet 1018 is no exception. Can't beat the price which was under $100 on sale. Normal suggested retail price was $180 which is high in my opinion.

You will need to do some hacking to get this to work on a MAC. Download these apps at www.linux-foundation.o...
and install them in the following order:
Install espgs
Install footamic
Install foo2zjs
Download sihp1018.img
download.uhulinux.hu/m...
Open up a Terminal.app window and cd to the directory the sihp1018.img file is.
Run the following commands:
o START --
arm2hpdl sihp1018.img> sihp1018.dl
sudo chown root:wheel sihp1018.dl
sudo chmod 644 sihp1018.dl
sudo mv sihp1018.dl /usr/local/share/foo2zjs/firmware/
o END --
-------last line of code-------> You may need to create the "firmware" folder manually (by revealing hidden files with ONYX) and pasting the sihp1018.dl into it yourself
Afterwards use the the "load_Laserjet_firmware_v4.command" file from the "Helpers" directory of the "Install foo2zjs" image.
Simple doubleclick on it and it will automatically load the firmware to the printer.
You may copy this file to your desktop as you have to load the firmware to the printer every time you switch the printer on.

This is a great little printer and is highly recommended. I just plugged it into XP and it worked perfectly out of the box. The small size fits nicely on the desk, and the print quality is very good as well. In short, this is a great replacement for the older, misfeeding, cheaper HP printer that it replaced. If you need a quality printer at a pretty good price (check for periodic rebate promos), this is a winner.

I bought this printer as a replacement for my existing Brother Inkjet Printer. It is very compact and fits well with a desktop and a laptop alike. It comes with a 1000 page starter cartridge which is good enough for people who use it moderately (Refills are also available for this model). The only visible drawback is open paper tray (but this shouldn't be a problem if you are not bothered about dusty papers). I would recommend this printer for those who want to switch from inkjet to Laser without a huge financial burden.

We purchased this to replace an inkjet printer. We like the small size which does not take up much room on a small desktop, and it is more economical than an inkjet. The quality of the B/W printing is very sharp and acceptable. Note that the initial toner cartridge has a 1000 page rating of a regular cartridge which is 2000 page rating. We are happy with the printer, the only question is how long it might last since the paper rollers seem skimpier/flimsier than on previous HP Lasers (LJ 3&4) we have used, but for the price it seems commensurate.

Weakness: power cord sticks out the back
The printer was very easy to get up and running, as all printers should be. There was an updated driver on the HP website. I just printed 2 envelopes for the first time and that went flawlessly using the individual paper feed. The printer stays on all the time. I would rather it had a configurable sleep time. However, it only uses 2 watts and does have a hard power switch. It is really quiet compared to the inkjet it has replaced. My only frustration was that the power cord is not set in like the usb cord. So the printer can't be pushed against the wall. I bought a right angle power cord only to find that the place to plug it in is turned sideways so the right angle has to go up or down. In my installation, down worked so I was able to push the printer back as much as I wanted. So far I am very happy with this printer.

I finally got tired of the inkjets. They are fine until you need to replace the ink, and it gets really expensive.
This really compact laser printer from HP fits perfectly into my computer center. Very fast. Installing drivers was easy, no conflicts or anything.
Does not come with USB cable, but I got enough USB cables laying around doing nothing.
Overall, very satisfied.

This printer is a great deal for the price. With the current available rebate, this printer costs $20. It is quick in printing and takes up only a small amount of space on my desk. Toner refills can be purchased cheap on E-Bay. HP is the best in printer quality.

unlike lack of usb cable and cartridges that will equalize the cost of cartridge very soon; overall this is a very good printer. I am giving it a five star because I compare it to the other printers. Pricey cartridges and no usb cable is almost a standard for personal printers within this price range so as a person who uses a lot of printers at home and work I definitely think this is a must buy especially under $50 after promotions.

TopI'm very unhappy with my HP 1018. The spooler and drivers keep being booted out on my Dell Vista laptop. I've not been able to print for 2 months. I used to restore and it would work again for a bit but now I can't even do a restore that works.

I bought this from a Brick and Mortar office supply store and I had to keep emailing HP regarding my rebate. They finally sent it out 2 months after I submitted it.
As for the printer itself, it fits general purpose, prints fast and in good resolution, and takes up little desk space. Haven't used it long enough to comment on the toner capacity yet. All in all a satisfactory purchase.
